The latest research buy ITU says “Half the world will be online by 2017”. I am sure you don’t understand what that really means in terms of business opportunities.

Let’s start it this way.

If half of 170Million Nigerians will be online by 2017, then you will have a market square of 85 million people available for buying and selling.

What are the opportunities?

1.       Sell of Cheap Smart phones

Think of how to deliver the cheapest means to this market square of 85 million people in Nigeria alone to enable them go online. The best means will be their phones, tablets and all manner of portable devices.

But for Nigeria, the killer will be the cost. The high end devices won’t drive the market. So look out for devices that will come below $50. These kinds of devices will be a must have for people between now and 2017.

But you must reorient yourself from just selling boxes to combining the selling of boxes with services. What will keep the income flowing in won’t be just the boxes, but the service delivery that goes with the boxes.

Now think of what that will mean as I won’t tell you more than these for free. Any more than these you will pay real cash. Services +the cheap smart phones =real cash flow

Services alone is good, selling boxes alone is also good but a combination of both service and tangible sells is the major driver , driving world economies of today.

Think of Google; they were only selling services, but as they wanted to expand, to enhance those services and create dedicated loyalty to Google, they entered into the smart phone market. That is how to create sustainability that endures.

The kind of services that can be combined with the sale of these cheap smart phones may include the following:

·         An app to make it easy for people who are not very literate to embrace online usage

·         Providing a medium ,sort of market square for yourself and the buyers

·         Providing an online support services for the devices purchased

·         Home delivery services

·         Training

·         Customized application that will link the buyers of these smart phones to know online stores and online malls

2.      Online Malls and Online stores

The more people embrace the online market square, the more the online stores become far more promising. It is just beginning now but will enter into its boom state between now and 2018. Any business can go online and can be transacted online.

With increasing security scare in physical malls and markets giving the incessant insurgent attacks and bombings, people will eventually embrace this type of transacting business.

In the next six months, I foresee even food stuff, vegetables, tomatoes, garri, akpu, etc, being traded online.

So those who will reap the initial benefits will go smiling to the banks. And they will be the early starters of programmers and web application developers, the online mall entrepreneurs, the online food market entrepreneurs, online market survey experts, ect.

3.       Logistics

The limiting factor of these online businesses will be the logistics.

The storage and delivery mechanism of purchased goods will become a major business opportunity very soon.

So this challenge will also be an emerging business opportunity.

How do I deliver a product from Lagos to Abuja for example?

How do I deliver these products within the metropolis in the most efficient way and on schedule?

So there will be need for controlled room storage systems that can be leased out to several online markets and malls,

There will be need for dry storage and cold storage compartments and warehousing.

These, themselves will form new business opportunities

4. Mobile applications

Well you remember Skype, an application developed by Janus Friis  from Denmark and Niklas Zennstorm from Sweden in 2003  as  a freemium voice over IP service and instant messaging client, acquired by eBay   for 2.5 billion dollars in 2009 and was eventually sold to  Microsoft in 2011 for 8.5 billion dollars. Think about that. The guys rose from literally nothing to 2.5 billion USD within six years.

As more and more bandwidth becomes cheaply available, phone companies, I mean companies providing normal voice services will begin to lose more as there will be a number of mobile applications that will enable people to make calls on the broadband link via data networks.

Companies will buy into these applications and use them for their inter-organizational communications. You can develop some these applications if you think you have the ability to do so.  Lots of money will stream in from this stuff of things in 2015 in particular.

With mobile applications becoming the norm for entrainment and communications in the 21st century, if you are able to come up with new business ideas, then you will certainly make good profits. Most popular applications in the market today provide similar functionality as the previous ones; they just do it more easily and more quickly.  For instance, the Pheed application was mainly a Twitter clone, however, it allowed people to attach music and video to their messages easily. It became highly successful because of its compatibility with the iphone line. Think of this. “WhatsApp” is worth $19 billion today.

Now Mobile application that will make it easy for anyone with any phone do do some online business will be it.

What about applications to make it easy to catch the next taxi close to my house or mobile apps that will allow the not too illiterate mobile users to transact business online?

Yes, apps that will address the needs of the majority of people living on less than $2 dollars are day may prove to be a profit spinner after all. There are just countless of applications that can be built. The limiting factor is your imagination.

5.     Online CAB services

Now think of the mega changes that will follow when half of us go online. That will include the way we move around. Having to pick your cab online will become an everyday experience, instead of coming out stand out in the sun or rain to wait for a taxi.

Those who will think out how to make it easy for us to pick a nearby cab online, without any extra additional cost to us in terms of what we pay for taxi fare, will go smiling to the banks. 6.      Green Energy

Currently, many people are looking for the alternatives to oil and gas monopoly that most state energy companies have.  Actually, there are viable alternative energy like natural gas, hydrogen and solar energy. However, many of these options are out of the financial rage for an average person. This is because there is limited demand to create the volume needed to reduce the price of energy in a substantial way.   In the current economy, an entrepreneur with a business that can reduce the cost of alternative energy will certainly take advantage of the market that is wide open for exploitation. Generally, there will be a great deal of resistance from already established energy powers, since the owners will think that their power monopoly might come to an end.  This energy business has the most profit potential because it is a product that everybody need on a daily basis.  Remember, the world population is expected to increase and the demand for green energy will be more evident than ever before to help save the environment and natural resource.

In one hour, the sun puts out enough energy to power every vehicle, factory and device on the planet for an entire year. Currently, we don’t have appropriate technology to harness this quantity of power from the sun. Technologies will emerge that will mimic natural processes to create small perpetual power generators to power small homes and offices.
